This policy briefing from CARE International UK outlines why women must be a central part of the response to the climate crisis, and argues that the UK Government, as host of the COP26 UN climate talks in November 2020 in Glasgow, has an influential and critical role to play in accelerating global ambition to stop the climate crisis, and securing commitments that put women first.

Adaptive management approaches potentially offer us opportunities to deliver high quality results in circumstances where change is complex, including in fragile, unstable or conflict affected places. However, building adaptive programming continues to be a challenge for the sector.

his research study, to complement the Understanding resilience: Perspectives from Syrians report, examines in greater depth the transformative resilience and gender norms for Syrian women in Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey. It specifically sought to answer one key question: “How has the Syrian conflict affected the role of Syrian women within their families and communities (positively and negatively) within refugee hosting communities in Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey?”

This report, based on in-depth and community-based research, sought to examine resilience in Syria from the experiences and reflections shared by Syrians inside the country. The research focused on the following questions: What does resilience mean from the perspective of people living in Syria? How has the conflict affected the role of women within their families and communities? How does it relate to the humanitarian community’s and CARE’s definitions of resilience? What systems need to be strengthened to better support the resilience of households and communities in protracted crisis?

When women are able to come together in safe spaces, they can use their collective power and voice to bring about change for a more equitable world. Women on the Move (WOM) is a CARE regional strategy launched in 2016 that mobilises savings groups in West Africa, so that women and girls can assert their basic rights. This report assesses CARE’s progress on this Impact Growth Strategy to date and shares success stories and challenges going forward.

CARE’s Emergency Shelter Team provides technical expertise in emergency shelter and reconstruction. In the financial year July 2018 - June 2019, CARE implemented 73 projects around the world with a shelter and housing component and two projects involving camp coordination and camp management. Around 1.6 million people received direct shelter assistance and a further 1.4 million people benefited indirectly from those projects. 54% of people reached were women and girls. The Emergency Shelter Team Annual Review 2019 sets out the ways that the team can support shelter responses around the world, and highlights a selection of shelter programme responses from the last financial year that reflect the scope and impact of CARE’s work.
