Violence and harassment in the workplace - whether in Westminster, Hollywood or McDonalds - continues to make headlines. Its impact on workers and business is increasingly becoming apparent. CARE research in the Cambodian garment sector revealed that there is an estimated 89M$ cost to the economy per year from absenteeism and lost productivity. Legislative changes are also afoot – with proposed changes in the UK and a new global convention due to be agreed in 2019. This week marks the one year anniversary of #MeToo, and the subsequent #AidToo movement. This transformed the global conversation, and put this critical issue high on the public agenda. I for one hope it stays there until we as a society and we as an industry overcome the power imbalances and gender inequality that underpin sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment.

CARE is adamant that the #MeToo movement should not go down in history as a flash in the pan, but that we must harness the moment to make it a significant milestone on the path towards gender equality. The agreement at the International Labour Conference (ILC) to establish a new, legally binding convention to ensure that abuse and harassment isn’t part of anyone’s job description, anywhere in the world, is a big step forward. We now have one year to ensure that this draft agreement is as strong as possible before the final vote next June.
