As part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, youth of all genders from the Balkans to the Great Lakes of Africa are joining together to change their societies. CARE International believes we should build on this momentum to make 2016 the Year of Engaging Men and Boys in stopping gender-based violence - and that reaching young people through education is key.

After the global summit on sexual violence ended, CARE International UK’s conflict policy team set ourselves the task of making sure the interesting ideas we heard did not stop there. Over the next few months we will be scoping out plans for a regional campaign in the Great Lakes of Africa on changing male attitudes to women and sexual violence through the school curricula in each country as part of our focus on protecting and empowering women in conflict. Suggestions of reading or contacts and any tips very welcome.

In the Balkans, the success of CARE’s work with young men in schools has led to governments in Serbia, Croatia and Kosovo approving and accrediting a life skills curriculum focused on gender-based violence, positive masculinities and relationships for use in secondary schools. Ahead of the Ending Sexual Violence in Conflict summit in June, CARE is calling on other governments to do the same. Why?
